PROCESS # COLLABORATIVE :: BUILDING WITH & FOR INHABITANTS _ S.+L. KROLL (BE) Nantes, FR, 2013

“The atelier’s natural instinct drives it to respect people (who really are future inhabitants of his buildings, not anyone walking in the street) at a level that it refuses to impose its way of life by means of a closed architecture. Even if this one could be inspired or artistic, it would not be made by people living in it.”

“Out of the “architecture of relationships” (intended not to be a formal architecture but as it could in a general sense be a “software architecture”) the atelier deducts a genuine unconcern for the formal aspect of his buildings-cities. The atelier’s natural instinct drives it to respect people (who really are future inhabitants of his buildings, not anyone walking in the street) at a level that it refuses to impose its way of life by means of a closed architecture. Even if this one could be inspired or artistic, it would not be made by people living in it.”http://homeusers.brutele.be/kroll/auai-whoswho.htm

Simone et Lucien Kroll : une architecture habitée

“le lieu unique”, Nantes (European green capital 2013)
25th september – 1st december 2013
Curator : Patrick Bouchain

“In le lieu unique, Patrick Bouchain – the architect behind the transformation of the former Lefèvre- Utile biscuit factory into le lieu unique, national – invites the architects, urban planners, and landscape designers Simone and Lucien Kroll. Since the 1970s, in opposition to the blind violence of modern architecture, Lucien and Simone Kroll have always fought for projects that harmoniously integrate the idea of a habitat, placing the inhabitant at its centre. Along with many other principles, this approach has accompanied Patrick Bouchain throughout his career. For the first time, this retrospective exhibition of Atelier Kroll brings together: – over 50 years of activity in the form of blueprints, texts and photos, – a vegetable garden outside le lieu unique, designed by Simone Kroll, and created thanks to the participation of volunteers and the parks department of Nantes, – weekly meetings and conferences with Simone & Lucien Kroll, Patrick Bouchain, Tsutomu Shigemura, Lieux Communs, Coline Serreau, Pierre Frey, Francis Hallé, among others. With the drive to pass these ideas on to others and keep them alive, Patrick Bouchain has invited the young collective ETC.” http://www.lelieuunique.com/site/index.php/2013/09/25/simone-et-lucien-kroll/
