URBAN CABINs :: ALTERNATIVE SOCIAL HOUSING PROTOTYPES

FACADES MICRO ARCHITECTURES CREATING INDIVIDUALIZED LIVING SPACES IN URBAN CONTEXTS
The “cabanon vertical” (Vertical Hut, South of France) is a multidisciplinary collective  who conjugates applied and visual arts.
The artistic work of the Cabanon Vertical rests on a crossed look at different landscapes – both urban and rural -, territorial planning and architecture. It deliberately acts on public spaces in order to be perceivable by the masses.
The work of the collective is about the place of the individual in the urban space, its freedom to act and in the development of its current practices.

The design of the projects passes by the observation of a context, the confrontation of points of view and the participation of the users.
By means of small structural prototypes that we attach on top of buildings or install in the middle of urban facilities, the collective devotes itself to defending individual values, diversity. Our objective always is to question the standardization at work in modern operations of town and country planning (particularly in housing developments) and to push populations to reappropriate the places in which they live. Based on these ambitions, the projects have diversified : to each urban landscape, its own specific problems that the collective strive to highlight. Their achievements can then take a poetic form, here playing with the notion of borders (outside / inside), there transcending the skin of a building trough adequate lighting.

How to be outside  (as to render the frontage inhabitable) despite of the mosquitos … ? It is accessed by escaping out the window.

Asked by “Recyclart” (Brussels, Belgium) : building a cabin on the façade of the Brussels-Chappelle Station. In this project, the vacuum created and resulting by the intertwined transport networks leads this project : for vacuum is the essence of architecture. The cabin becomes a splintered form that shows this vacuum, exploses it. Combining a network of three strips, it designs an habitable vacuum : the allegory of a house. Each of this strip represents an element constituting architecture.

Wallpaper is here an archeological element. The envelop of the room is taken out, inside out as a glove, to create a meaningful external volume. This extension on the façade, 3 square meters big, creates an occupied space between the apartment and the external landscape. This cabin is retractable ; its volume changes, depending on the presence or the absence of the inhabitant.

“Mirabilis”, a long building that never was completed, rises showing its structure. It is there, an urban abandoned space or a soon-to-be-deserted rural area : somewhere else. Burned cars skeletons, graffitis and grading she eps. Like a Piranese drawing, incomplete, caught by time, a ruin that has been reconquest by nature. Mirabilis has remained, raw witness of the 1970s architectural model. “Quartier d’été” shows the conquests of the inhabitants. Restauring the individual against the imperium of the collectivity, the single against the serial. Images from Hanoi jump in mind, projected on this façade : Hanoi balconies sticked on the Mirabilis skeleton (via : http://lecabanonvertical.com/cabanon_english.swf)
